We’ve written a fair few articles on how to place rugs around the home, whether it’s hot to place a living room or dining room rug, a kitchen rug and whether or not you should buy a dining room rug. When it comes to rugs, we know what we’re talking about. With over30 years of experience in the rug industry, we’ve seen styles and personal taste change and adapt and we’re always monitoring industry trends to make sure we’re one step ahead.
Adding small or large rugs to your bedroom can not only make the room feel cosier but also help distinguish one part of the room from another. However, there's a subtle art to knowing how and where to place your bedroom rugs.
While there is no rule of thumb when it comes to choosing a rug for your bedroom, your rug should serve as a functional piece of art first and foremost. Your rug should be something that you want to enjoy, find comfortable and even useful. Bedrooms with a subdued colour palette can really benefit from a well-placed rug.
Let’s look at some rug placements around the bedroom to see what fits where and if any designs from our range suit your bedroom’s design.
Placing a rug next to your bed is a good idea for people who want their rug to be seen in full. Another alternative to having a rug next to your bed is to have runners alongside each side of your bed, with most people going for matching patterns or tones. If you’re working on a budget, buying two runners as opposed to one large rug is almost always more cost-effective and can offer a unique design element.
How long the side runner rugs depend on a few things; your personal preference and the size of your bed or bedroom. If you’re working with a smaller bedroom, you don’t want the runners to extend beyond the bed, or even be the same size as the bed. Choose runners that are about ¾ of the bed’s size, this way it makes the room look bigger and you still have plenty of room to allow for a cosy entrance and exit of your bed. Accent rugs work very well for this placement idea, especially if your room already adopts a subtle tonal scheme.
Alternatively, you can purchase made to measure rugs (talk to us if this is something you’re looking for) if you’re looking for a specific size for your runner or normal rug.
This is one of the most common options when it comes to placing your bedroom rug. Placing a rug under the bed anchors the room’s largest (in most cases) piece of furniture, offering a visually satisfying and dimensionally accurate aesthetic. Of course, everyone’s bed is different and it’s important to take this into account. If you have nightstands flanking your bed, decide whether or not you want the rug to go under these as well.
Some people enjoy having the rug run all the way through to the headboard as it’s nice to step out of bed onto a cosy rug, especially if you have hard floors. As a rough estimate, if you have a 6 by 6-foot mattress, your rug should be larger than 12 x 9 feet. Anything smaller than this and you risk the rug being visually swallowed by the bed. The more room you have in your bedroom, the easier this is to tailor. For smaller bedrooms, you may have to adjust the positioning of the rug to ensure it juts out where you want it.
For example, if your bed sits in a right angle, you can sacrifice having the rug jut out of both ends jut out in favour of the one where you’ll be getting in and out of bed.
This option leans towards bedrooms that are bigger, as placing rugs in certain areas of your room naturally requires some space. How to place bedroom rugs in this style will also depend on your current furniture (dressers, seating areas, cupboards, TVs etc). For example, if your bedroom has a reading or work desk, a rug should feature underneath to separate this area. It’s important that the rug you choose to sit under your desk isn’t too small as it can become lost. Your rug must extend beyond the front legs of your chair, even when it’s pulled out to offer a complete look.
An important note to consider is that while bespoke rugs can look great in bedrooms and other areas of your home, you don’t have to spend too much time or money on buying a perfectly bespoke rug. Instead, opt for vintage-looking and more classic rug shapes and styles. This way, the rugs do not take away from the personality of your bedroom space. Rugs aren’t designed to fit perfectly in any and every room, that's what’s so unique about them and it’s more rewarding when you’re able to perfectly place a bedroom rug.
Strictly speaking, there are no core rules when it comes to placing bedroom rugs. However, it’s certainly important to understand the layout of your bedroom and the type, size and colour of the rug(s) you’re choosing to buy. It’s important you take these considerations into account before going ahead and buying the first rug you see.
Knowing how to place a rug in any room of your house is important if you’re someone who values interior design and doesn’t want to waste money on a rug that doesn't suit the size, shape or design of your bedroom.
