Can the Colour of Your Rug Really Influence Your Mood?

Did you know that there’s an entire field of alternative medicine dedicated to the way colour impacts your moods? It’s true! Known as chromotherapy, this contentious form of therapy is hotly debated by many, but its fundamentals are used in various forms of interior design. So let’s look at how you can use the tenets of chromotherapy to (potentially) influence your moods.

What is chromotherapy?

So, to start at the beginning, what exactly is chromotherapy and how does it claim that colour can affect mood? Well, this alternative therapy actually dates back to the year 1095, when great thinker Avicenna wrote that “colour is an observable symptom of disease”. From this small seed, the whole concept of chromotherapy was born, and it still remains a popular idea today. In a nutshell, proponents of chromotherapy claim that exposure to a specific colour can bring about positive mental and physical changes… but how?

Colours: what are they good for?

So if colours really can impact our bodies and minds, what exactly does each colour do? The theory behind chromotherapy actually provides guidelines which explain the alleged benefits of each colour. Here are the most common colours and their supposed health benefits:

  • Red can help us to feel more mentally calm and grounded.
  • Orange improves the stability of our moods.
  • Violet can help us to focus on mental tasks more easily.
  • Yellow can improve self-confidence and give us a mental boost.

These are just a handful of the suggestions made by the chromotherapy ethos. Certainly food for thought, but is there any science here?

Chromotherapy: fact or fiction?

It’s important to note that there is no scientific evidence to support the benefits claimed by chromotherapy. That said, there’s no denying that certain colours can indeed make a room feel different. Which colours work for one person may not work for another, so it’s a good idea to consider the mood you’d like to create and which colours best suit that. Perhaps blue is soothing to you, or maybe red gets you feeling energized; either way, you don’t need scientific evidence to prove what you already know! Sometimes the colour choice for your rug comes more from the heart than the head.
