The Basics: 3 of the Most Common Questions about Rugs

Unlike many modern products on the market, rugs don’t generally come with an instruction manual. This means that, very often, even the most basic do’s and don’ts of rug ownership aren’t very clear – which can lead to various problems. With this in mind, the team at Rugs Direct have come up with 3 of the most common questions we’re asked about the basics of owning a rug.

3. Is it okay to use a vacuum cleaner on a new rug?

Generally speaking, it’s perfectly fine to use a vacuum cleaner on a new rug – especially rugs that are flat-woven. However, we’d recommend caution with rugs that have particularly long fibres. For example, any form of shaggy rug may potentially snag in the mechanism of the vacuum, which can be a problem. In this case, you can look at other options such as dry-cleaning or handheld vacuums.

2. The fibres of my rug are shedding… why?

If your rug is new, it’s expected that there’ll be a little bit of shedding to start, especially if it’s a wool rug. This is a simple side-effect of the manufacturing process, although shedding with new rugs is generally more common with shaggier rug piles. If your rug is older and is shedding, there can be a couple of reasons, but primarily it’s wear and tear that’s the culprit. We’d recommend rotating your rugs a couple of times a year to ensure no one spot is subject to excess foot-traffic.

1. My new rug keeps slipping when I walk on it. How can I fix this?

Here’s a question we hear all the time at Rugs Direct: How can you prevent your new rug from slipping, especially when it’s on a smooth floor? The answer is simple: install some rug underlay. You can find rug underlay for either smooth floors or carpets, and it works by creating friction between the underside of the rug and the floor surface. It’s lack of friction that causes slippage, so rug underlay is an easy way to solve the problem. You can cut underlay to almost any size, then insert it invisibly below your rug to elegantly prevent slipping indefinitely.

We hope these five questions have set your mind at rest if you’re a new rug owner, but if not, you can call our friendly team today on 0845 838 8638. And do keep an eye on the Rugs Direct blog, as we’ll be exploring more common questions in a future blog post.
