Don't Panic! How to Remove Cosmetics Stains from Your Rug

Few things have the ability to instil more outright panic than dropping make-up or cosmetics on your premium rug. Not only could make-up create stains that are hard to get out, but (depending on the type of cosmetics), they can also do permanent damage to the rug fibres themselves. So if you’ve accidentally dropped cosmetics on your favourite rug, what do you do? Firstly, try not to panic! Next, take a look at our list of cosmetics below and check out our tips on removing the stains…

Lipstick

Lipstick is generally made from a mix of wax, oils, and emollients – all of which make for a stubborn stain. That said, you can get good results for removing lipstick from rugs by mixing warm water with a small dash of washing powder detergent. Gently work this into the stain until the lipstick lifts away. Try not to let the cleaner sit for too long on the rug surface because it may de-colour over time. If the lipstick is already dry, you might also try to ‘chip’ away the gunk using a dull knife or a spoon.

Nail polish

Nail polish is another stubborn stain, especially if the polish has already had time to dry. It may seem obvious, but nail polish remover is actually a great way to remove a stain of this type. However, be sure that the remover is the acetone-free to protect the rug pile from any damage. If you're not sure about this method, you can also try using a window cleaning spray, which may work to dissolve the nail polish from the pile.

Liquid foundation

Foundation is one of the staples of all make-up bags, but it's also one that can cause major stains on rugs. Luckily, there's a simple way to remove liquid foundation if you accidentally spill some on your favourite rug. You'll need to use a little bit of 3% hydrogen peroxide (available from your chemist) applied directly to the stain. Leave it for about two minutes, then wash it away with warm water. If the stain remains in place, rinse and repeat until your rug is back to its former glory.

We hope our tips have helped you save your rug from the terrors of spilled cosmetics, but if not, don’t forget that we offer a wide range of premium quality rugs. Have a question about rugs? Call our team anytime on 0845 838 8638.
