There’s a lot to think about when you're planning that next rug purchase. Of course, you'll need to consider the colour and design of the piece, but there's arguably something more important than those two: the size of the rug. With that in mind, and with 2017 just around the corner, in today's blog post we’ll give you the lowdown on fit and size for your next rug.
The basics of choosing a rug size
It may seem like picking the size of your new rug is a simple task: simply look at the space and find something that fits, right? Well, yes and no. If you’re laying a new rug, you probably wouldn’t want it to stretch from wall to wall like a carpet. At the same time, you wouldn’t want it too small as it may get lost in the aesthetics. If you have furniture that will sit on top of the rug, you want to make sure there’s enough space around it so that it doesn’t seem like it’s balancing on an edge. Coffee tables are a great example of a piece of furniture that can serve as a great centrepiece for a new rug, but large area rugs can also accommodate chairs and even sofas.
One big rug or multiple smaller ones?
If you’re aiming to add a rug to large room like a living room or lounge, you might assume that a big area rug is the right choice. In many cases, this is an excellent choice, however there are some room configurations that don’t necessarily suit larger area rugs. For example, if you have a big table or sofa near the middle of a room, it may actually make more sense to lay two rugs: one on each side of the focal point of the room.
Maintaining the balance
The main thing to remember when sizing up a new rug is that you want to always maintain a sense of aesthetic balance. We’d recommend sketching a rough top-down view of the room, then trying out different rug placement until you’re happy with the balance. This can really help you get a sense of how things will look before you actually buy your new rug.
