Non-Slip Rugs: How to Secure a Rug to a Hardwood Floor

With hardwood flooring more popular than ever before, it’s no surprise that lots of people are looking for non-slip rugs. If you fall into this category, it’s not actually a specific type of rug you need, but rather the right techniques for securing the rug. The team here at Rugs Direct has many year experience stopping rugs from slipping, so we’ve collected a few of our best tips to share with you below.

Tip #1: Try to create friction below the rug itself

If you’re really trying to save some money, there are some methods you can try at home to stop rugs slipping. Your main aim should be to create some friction below the rug, which will prevent the easy slipping of the rug. To create this friction, you could apply some strips of masking tape directly to the floor, or add some strips of rubber if you have any. These solutions may work; however, we’d recommend trying step #3 below to guarantee some reliable results.

Tip #2: Weigh the rug down

Another option which you may be willing to try is to actually weigh the rug down and anchor it to the floor. For example, if you have a large dining or coffee table, you may try placing this directly onto the rug that’s on the hardwood floor. This solution is likely to offer some degree of protection against the rug slipping, but it’s not ideal if you don’t want to move your existing furniture around! Likewise, even with something heavy on top, there’s no guarantee that it’ll stay in place for good.

Tip #3: Invest in some quality rug underlay

Here’s our recommended solution to prevent rugs slipping in any way: installing a quality rug underlay. By installing underlay to your rug on a hardwood floor, you can be 100% guaranteed that the rug will remain stationary. Even better, rug underlay can be sized to your liking, meaning it’ll be completely invisible in the room – no need to move furniture or add any makeshift solutions! You can learn more about our recommended rug underlay right here at Rugs Direct.

Smooth hardwood floors can really bring a sense of style to any home, but look even better with a rug on top. With the tips above, you’ll be able to enjoy any rug you’d like without fear of the rug slipping a single inch. Have a question about rugs on hardwood floors?
