Our Top Tips for Vacuum Cleaning Your Rugs (The Right Way)

Owning a rug is something of a long-term commitment. After all, when maintained properly, modern rugs can last decades. But the key is cleaning your rug in just the right way. Today, we’ll share some of our top tips for using a vacuum cleaner on your rug.

Tip #1: Don’t vacuum your rug too often

One of the funny things about rugs is that they don’t generally appear to be dirty until it’s too late. If you wait until your rug is laden with grime before getting the vac out, it may not be very effective. Instead, we recommend you stick to a regular schedule exclusively for your rug and separate from your regular cleaning. If you have a flat-woven rug, you can vacuum more often without risk of wear and tear, but for rugs with longer pile lengths, we’d recommend vacuuming carefully just once per month.

Tip #2: Use the right attachments for the right rug

One of the key factors in vacuum cleaning a rug correctly is ensuring you get good coverage. Because some rugs can be so dense, it’s easy to miss those nooks and crannies, making the task even trickier. Luckily, you can ensure you do a thorough job by using the right vacuum cleaner attachment for the task. You should be able to make a good guess as to which will work best, but generally speaking we’d recommend using an upholstery brush on a flat-woven rug and something like a crevice tool on a shaggy rug with longer fibres.

Tip #3: Go with the grain

This tip is especially relevant if you have a vacuum cleaner with rotating brush inside the head: always move with the grain of the fibres. The reason is that if you consistently apply friction against the grain of the rug fibres, you can reduce the rug’s lifespan and actually cause damage slowly over time. By always vacuuming with the grain of the rug fibres, you’ll avoiding putting excess strain on the fibres at the point they attach to the rug canvas. Another good way to vacuum your flat-woven rug is to go width-wise, which will also avoid any unnecessary strain to the fibres.
