Technically speaking, there is no one way to perfectly position or style a rug under your bed. But there are ways to do it to make a rug stand out as a feature in your room, or to complement the rest of your décor in a way that’s ideal for your space. Rules for Getting an Under Bed Rug
As a general rule of thumb, you should never have a rug that covers your entire floor (meaning from wall to wall). Instead, you should leave a minimum of 10 to 20 inches of room between the base trim and the edge of your rug. This fills the space but also prevents any uncomfortable optical illusions that might make it look like the rug is floating.
What Size Rug Should Go Under a Bed?
The size of rug that should go under your bed will all depend on a number of variables, including:

- How much furniture you have in your bedroom

Super King Size
A super king size bed requires a rug that’s designed for spacious rooms. We would always suggest a 7’10” x 11’2” rug for this.
King Size
Much like a super king size bed, king size beds will also suit a 7’10” x 11’2” rug. Other sizes, such as an 8’ x 10’ rug, may also work if you have a smaller master bedroom.
Queen Size
Depsite the smaller frames, queen size beds have a number of options for rug sizes. The one that will be best will depend on the size of the room. Generally speaking, a 6’7 x 9’10 rug will fit in proportion to the size of the bed, though it will not cover the floor underneath nightstands if this is what you had planned.
Standard double beds will also benefit from rugs of this size.
Twin Size
Twin size beds will benefit from a range of different rug sizes. The largest of these would be an 8’ x 10’ rug. However, 8’ x 9’ rugs and 4’ x 7’ rug sizes would also work with this size.
If you have two single beds in a room, another option for a rug between them is to use a carpet runner.
Options for Placing Rugs Under Beds
It will be up to you entirely how you choose to position your rug under your bed, but we can recommend some options for their placement:
Wall to Wall
In the event that you do decide on the wall to wall option, this does save the time and hassle of figuring out rug placement. It will cover every part of your floor and you can even choose to increase comfort, insulation, and aesthetic appeal by placing other rugs over the top.
Framing the Bed
This is one of the more popular options for styling rugs in bedrooms, but the exact position of the rug may vary depending on the size of the bed and any surrounding furniture.
Normally, the bed will be positioned against one wall of the bedroom and the rug will run along the sides and length of the bed. This should give you enough space to plant your feet on it comfortably when getting up.
Half Under Bed
Placing your rug half under the bed is another option that you can get creative with. For instance, you might choose to have a large rectangular rug that runs along the side of your bed and is half under the bed, so that you are able to put your feet on it when you get up in the morning.
On the other hand, you may decide to get a circular rug for the foot of the bed, which may also fit half under the bed, half-exposed. Fluffy rugs are considered a rather stylish choice for this option.
Tips for Choosing the Right Rug and Placement

- If you want an area rug underneath night stands, all the legs should be on the rug. This could make your furniture unbalanced otherwise.
- If you have a seat or bench at the foot of your bed, the same will apply; there is a chance you will feel off-balanced sitting there if the rug only covers half the seat’s legs.
- Choosing a small rug for a large bedroom can make the space feel even larger – to the point where something may feel out of place. Ensure the size of the rug fits the room.
- The best bedroom rug options are typically plush or fluffy, with a high pile. Wool area rugs are considered one of the best choices for this.
- Even area rugs under beds can still present a tripping hazard. Placing double-sized carpet tape or a nonslip rug mat underneath can help to keep edges down.
- Using rug pads underneath your rug will add another layer of cushioning, reduce noise in the room, and insulate a space from a cold subfloor.
- Remember that rugs weighed down by furniture will get indents over time. Turn your rug every so often to prevent these from becoming deep.
- A circle rug will be easier to turn more often than a rug that’s a rectangle, so you may consider these as a good option if you would like less hassle when turning.
